Part 2 - "PTI Mobile Media Volunteers Scheme - the alternative mass media"

PTI: Brainstorming for a better media campaign and to neutralize mainstream media propaganda
.
By @PTI_FATA (13 Sep 2012)
.
In part 1 of this article we briefly analyzed 2 non-viable options to get around the "media propaganda problem".
1. Do nothing; let it be the way it is. (non-viable)
2. Cry foul and still do nothing concrete to counter the propaganda. (non-viable)
Option 3 is discussed below.
.
3. Mobile Media - the untapped capability of the PTI/ISF Youth
.
Before anybody declares me Agha Waqar-type (running PTI media on mobile), let me admit very honestly that I exactly mean it i.e. "Running PTI Media on mobile". Let me present 4 facts before I come back to the "Mobile Media" idea.
.
Fact # 1:
As of May 2012, Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) statistics tell us that cellular phone (mobile) density in Pakistan has reached 68% i.e. more than 119 million (11.9 Crore) people out of Pakistan's 180 million (18 Crore) population are using cellphones.
Does this fact ring any alarm-bells? No? Okay lets add to it.
.
Fact # 2:
According to the latest electoral statistics issued by ECP on 31 July 2012 , nearly 20% of the total eligible voters are below the age of 25 (1st-time voters). A further 27% of total voters are in the age bracket 25-35. So a whopping 47% of the voters are in the "youth" category.
Does this fact ring any alarm bells? No? Okay lets add to it.
.
Fact # 3:
Everybody knows the strength of PTI actually lies in the youth especially ISF. It is the youth/ISF volunteers who run PTI's facebook/twitter/blogging campaign pages. PTI's 3 official pages (https://www.facebook.com/PrimeMinisterImranKhanhttps://www.facebook.com/ImranKhan.Official , https://www.facebook.com/PTIOfficial) have nearly 1.4 million Likes collectively (more than the total Likes of official pages of all other major political parties combined). Similarly Imran Khan's Twitter account has more than 360,000 followers (more than the combined total of leaders of all other parties). These numbers don't include the literally thousands of unofficial PTI pages made by volunteers from all over Pakistan (who are active day and night for Insaf's cause without any PTI official recognition or support).
Does this fact ring any alarm bells? No? Okay lets add to it.
.
Fact # 4:
PTI recently concluded its membership campaign and according to official sources, more than 10 million people took membership of the party. This membership campaign would not have been the success that it was, if ISF/Youth volunteers had not put their tireless efforts to add steam to the campaign.
Does this fact ring any alarm bells? No? Oh come on guys. Get the bells ringing already for God sake.
.
Okay let me put the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle together for you i.e. lets combine all these alarming facts (alarming for the Status-Quo, not for PTI).
.
Most Pakistanis have mobiles + Majority voters are youth + Youth volunteers are PTI's biggest campaign strength + Youth volunteers have Mobiles??? Bells ringing? Yessss.
.
How about "Mobile Media Volunteers" comprising of ISF/Youth volunteers all over Pakistan, in every city, every union council, every village, every mohallah.
(Mobile not in the sense that the volunteers will be on the move but in the sense that they will run the campaign through mobiles just like "Social Media Volunteers" are already running campaign on Facebook/Twitter etc through their PCs. So these volunteers will be "Mobile Media Volunteers").
.
Q: What will be needed for a "Mobile Media Volunteer"?
Ans: A mobile with a memory card and multimedia (audio/video) player plus an "SMS Bundle Package". (Most youth already have such mobiles and packages.)
.
Mechanism for "PTI Mobile Media Volunteers" Program
.
The mechanism may consist of 3 tiers.
.
1st tier - "Mobile Media Content Developer Teams" at central/provincial levels with the exclusive task of compiling short campaign Videos/SMSs clarifying PTI's policies and PTI stance on various current issues like Drone Attacks, Karachi Target Killings, Quetta/GB Shia Killings, Judiciary, Corruption etc.
Also to-the-point logical responses to anti-PTI propaganda stunts (like SKMH, Bani Gala House, Electables, MQM cases, Establishment, Jewish Lobby etc) be prepared.
All these videos should be derived from speeches/interviews/talk shows of central leadership especially Chairman Imran Khan).
These videos/SMSs should be shared through PTI official pages on Facebook/Twitter/Blogs. (All unofficial pages will share them automatically, rather more automatically :P)
.
2nd tier - "Local Mobile Media Teams" at District/City/UC level whose task should be to download to their mobiles the videos/SMSs prepared by 1st-tier teams. A complete database of PTI videos/SMSs should be maintained by these local teams, on PCs as well as mobiles. The database should be updated daily. They should then share these videos with all ISF/Youth volunteers in their area through Bluetooth, USBs, Data Cables etc (SMSs be shared through mobiles by keeping mobile numbers of volunteers at local media team).
.
3rd tier - "Mobile Media Volunteers" in every nook and corner of the country whose task should be to show/share these PTI videos/SMSs through their mobiles with all non-aligned people, undecided voters, elders, illiterate people etc. Female volunteers may share the videos/SMSs with their friends, relatives etc and try to raise awareness level among the people. These videos/SMSs should be used to motivate people about registering their vote; to register for PTI membership; to overcome effects of negative media propaganda about PTI and to become the missing link between PTI and the common man.
Local media teams may ask for progress from volunteers regularly and ensure that progress is made.
This exercise will also ensure that PTI/ISF youth volunteers constantly remain busy in canvassing and new volunteers are groomed which will help PTI when it needs volunteers for election campaign.
.
(Note: The volunteers may directly download videos from PTI pages too if they have internet access).
.
The Best Part - This procedure can be used the other way round too i.e. volunteers remain in touch with the common people, hear their opinions and record them. These opinions may be given to the local mobile media team who may send them to the central/provincial mobile media team (if necessary). Worthwhile suggestions/opinions/complaints may be presented to PTI leaders at appropriate level. In this way, an incorruptible & "not-for-sale" dedicated PTI media will be established. It will also serve as a two-way communication channel between the ordinary man on the street and the PTI leadership.
.
Does this whole scheme sound a bit "impractical"?
Well PTI and especially Imran Khan have always done things that initially looked "impractical".

So Insafians. Pull-up your Socks. Its no use being Cry-Babies and complaining about anti-PTI propaganda on TV/News media.
Lets take our destiny in our own hands and not look towards any ABC channel/newspaper/anchor/columnist for the cause of Justice. They are all businessmen and are in the media for business (to earn something). The sooner we understand this fact, and get hold of the "Free of Cost" alternative media, the better.

Otherwise, We (PTI) may well end up with another 1997 in 2013.
.
Note to PTI unofficial Volunteers: Even if PTI officials don't pay heed to this scheme, lets start this process ourselves. Lets be the ambassadors of "Change" that we all hope for.
Wassalam.
